October 21, 2013Kansas State head coach Bill Snyder indicated during the Big 12 teleconference Monday that he's uncertain how the second bye week in the last four weeks might affect the Wildcats as they prepare to face West Virginia on Saturday in Manhattan.
How do you think the off week will help the team get ready for the rest of the season?
"Now, you're without a week of significant competition and that can have a fallback effect on your players. How do they respond? That's probably the important thing as much as anything. Up until this point in time I think they've responded reasonably well. They got some rest as well. They were off the entire weekend and off Monday of last week as well. They've hopefully gotten their legs back underneath them."
What are your thoughts about West Virginia from what you've seen this year? There was so much focus last year on Geno Smith and the wide receivers and they've played a lot different quarterbacks this year. What are your thoughts on what they've landed on?
"They've got some awfully talented young guys, good running backs, and wide receivers that have good range to them and can get up on the deep balls. They have a substantial offense. They've had some difficulty on defense time to time and even though they lost the ball game because they turned it over six times, they gave up I want to say only 233 total yards to Maryland, and that's good. They held Oklahoma to a 16-7 ballgame. You can't do that unless you're playing good defense."
West Virginia's defense started out the season well but in its last two Big 12 outings they've struggled a little bit. Have you noticed anything different in the last two games and what have you seen defensively in the last two games from them? SNYDER: "Well, they do an awful lot of things defensively in terms of their pressures and secondary, they might be kind of having the stabilize what they're doing a little bit. I don't know if that's an accurate assessment or not. It appears that way. They've gotten penalized a little bit and it's been costly in the games in some critical situations that gave new life to Texas Tech and in the previous game against Baylor. Baylor is an excellent football team. But you go back to Oklahoma State and Oklahoma State has lost only one ball game and that's to West Virginia. You could probably say it's consistency as much as anything else. As time goes on you through normal happenstance become a little more consistent."
I wanted to ask you about your philosophy on special teams. You have a special team's coordinator, your son. Is he 100 percent dedicated toward special teams or does he have any other responsibility coaching wise? Have you always had a special teams coach?
Why do you think having a special teams coach is better than having other assistants split it up and from the time he's been doing it has it benefited the team to do it that way?
