HATTIESBURG, Miss.(AP) Jeremy Wise scored 22 points to lead Southern Mississippi to a 96-70 win over Texas El-Paso on Tuesday.
The win broke a two game losing streak for Southern Miss (16-13, 8-7 Conference USA) and assured the Golden Eagles a winning season. The Miners (16-12, 7-8) dropped their second straight.
Playing the final home game of the year, Southern Miss took a solid advantage early on, getting nine points apiece from Wise and R.L. Horton in the first five minutes for a 23-10 lead. They never trailed.
Southern Miss shot 64 percent from the field in the first 10 minutes of the game, while holding the Miners to just 28 percent in the same span.
Stefon Jackson scored 10 points in the first half for UTEP as they team tried to close the gap. But Sai'Quon Stone hit a 3-pointer with seconds left in the first half to take a 47-32 halftime lead.
UTEP cut the deficit to 12 early in the second half, but Craig Craft hit his third 3-pointer of the game to put the Golden Eagles up 58-43. UTEP got no closer the rest of the way.
