Smith signs with Deacs

Christchurch (Va.) Christchurch School OT Will Smith signed with Wake Forest at 8:26 AM today, Feb. 1.

Rivals.com rates the 6-foot-5, 285-pound Smith as a three-star recruit and the No. 25 overall prospect in Virginia.

He committed to Wake Forest July 25. Steed Lobotzke took over Smith's recruitment for the Demon Deacons after his primary recruiters Tim Billings and Keith Henry were let go from the coaching staff.

"I grew up in Winston-Salem and I was basically born and raised there," Smith said in a prior interview with Deacons Illustrated. "I was always around Wake Forest so it was a very easy decision. It's 45 minutes from where I live now so it's close to home and the campus is almost just like the school I'm at now. The architecture and everything is the same."

In only his second year of playing organized football Smith earned First Team All-State and First Team All-Conference honors on both sides of the ball, and was voted Defensive MVP for his team this season. He recorded 80 tackles and five sacks this season to help lead Christchurch School to a state championship crown and a 12-0 record.

Smith's strength is his ability to pass-block, which is an area Wake needs to improve in.
