McGrath impressive at camp
Kicker/Punter J.J. McGrath of Lutheran North High School in Macomb, Michigan is one of the top prospects in the nation at his position. McGrath is currently on the road stopping at several camps.SpartanMag.com has the latest on his recruitment.
Michigan State is apparently looking to add a kicker to the class of 2013. With Dan Conroy heading into his senior season and Kevin Muma the Spartans are taking a look at a kicking prospect. We asked McGrath what type of information he has received from the Spartan staff about a potential scholarship offer.
The 6-foot-2, 205-pound McGrath was at Louisiana State University this weekend. His next stop will be at Alabama and then off to South Carolina. We asked him about his time down in Baton Rouge.
"I picked up a lot of interest from Louisiana State," McGrath said. "I won the field goal and punting competitions going up against Kohl's Kicking and Chris Sailers Kicking #1 and # 2 kickers in America. It was a big day for me, huge talent was there."
McGrath had an outstanding junior season for Lutheran North High School he was named All-Catholic 1st Team, All-State East 1st Team and All-State Division 4-8 1st Team. He was able to kick the 8th Longest FG in state history of 52yds and had a punting average of 44.6 yards. McGrath has positive feelings about Michigan State University and know the program well.
"Michigan State has said that they will offer a red-shirt kicking position but, also want a punter which is why Coach Tressel is also interested in my punting," McGrath said. "Coach Salem is my primary recruiter, but I speak with all of them, Coach Salem, Coach Tressel and Coach Dantonio. I love Michigan State. My mother's side of the family went there as well as most of my high school friends and former high school friends (Holt High School). I love the unity of the players, the coaching staff, and I'm actually very close with Sadler, Muma, and Conroy. It's a huge family, and if I can join my buddy Jon Reschke and commit there that would be awesome. We'll see though."
One thing McGrath is looking for is a school that provides him a solid opportunity to contribute for several years. That is why he is visiting specific schools.
"Both South Carolina and Alabama are offering punters so we are leaving to go down there of Friday. South Carolina is also a situation where I could get looked at as a kicker. Michigan State likes me as a kicker, but I would also be Mike's (Sadler) back-up until he graduates."
If McGrath red-shirt at Michigan State he would walk into a situation where he would have a chance to be a 4-year starter at kicker and possibly 3-years as a punter. It is that versatility that makes him a player the staff is looking forward to having on camp. Michigan State will hold a kicking camp on June 19th.
SpartanMag.com will be sure to keep in contact with McGrath in the coming weeks. He has informed us that he hopes to make his college decision by July 20th if things go as planned.
