Georgia DT prospect Newton commits to K-State

It took a while, but the Wildcats have landed another defensive tackle in the 2018 recruiting class.

Defensive tackle Jaylen Pickle was the first pledge of the cycle but they had been unable to address the position of need ever since. The wait is over. Douglas (Ga.) Coffee High senior Derick Newton has committed to Kansas State.

To be fair, this was not a surprise. Newton would have been in the commit column long ago if he had been able to visit, but the timing was difficult because of the late playoff run he was a part of. Coffee High played in the Georgia Class 6A state championship Friday night December 15, falling to Lee County 28-21 in overtime.

The sting of that loss will always persist, but his weekend in Manhattan surely made up for it. He was pursued aggressively the past couple of weeks by assistants Andre Coleman and Mo Lattimore.

Rivals lists him as a defensive end, but he will play on the interior for the Wildcats. He certainly looks the part already but he’ll bulk up even more once he arrives on the K-State campus.
