For those of you who are already subscribed, a sincere thank you. As part of this thanks, we've put together the following piece on the first 100 days of KSO as a look back on the ride we've been on together.
We don't want to get too deep into numbers, but your commitment to us during these 100 days has allowed this to be the most successful changeover to take place in the Rivals.com network, and allowed this site to continue its growth. It's time to say thank you, and we'll also certainly ask for your continued help and to #tellyourfriends.
Here we go.
What we've done: In 100 days our in-house staff has produced 537 pieces of content, 47 podcasts and 57 videos. That's an average of just over 5.3 pieces of content every day for 100 days.
What you've done: Created tens of thousands of posts and millions of views in just three months on The Foundation. Those numbers aren't exaggerations. There's been celebration, arguments, gifs, tidbits, meltdowns, breaking news, everything. It's perfectly imperfect; and it's your community.
You make this website what it is, nobody else.
FROM THE STAFF
Jeffrey Martin (Managing Editor): Can’t believe it’s been 100 days.
Truth be told, after the first couple of weeks, it felt like we’d been doing the site for three months already. But that was more from a comfort standpoint with the rest of the crew - and because of a lack of sleep. Why no rest? Because we were so excited about producing new and compelling content for you all to consume and creating a true community on the message board. We still are, really. It’s what drives us every day.
So, what am I proud of? Everything. I don’t regret a thing, although it’d be regrettable if I didn’t take a moment to thank the crew - DY, FLANDO!, Natz and Nelson - for their efforts. But I have to single out Dale - that’s Matt Hall, guys - for being my co-pilot in this wacky ride. And that’s precisely what he is in this venture - my equal and peer.
As I told him recently, I didn’t want to do this without him. Would I have? I honestly don’t know. It’s weird how life works out - at his wedding, we talked about teaming up one day to deliver the sort of K-State coverage you all deserved. After 100 days at KSO, I’d say we’re well on the way.
Matt Hall (Senior Writer): This site has always meant a lot to me. I subscribed to the K-State Rivals.com site back in 2001. In 2003, I got the opportunity to come onto the site as a part-time writer. It was an opportunity I hadn't earned and was fortunate to have given to me. By 2005, I was the editor of the site and was lucky enough to be in that role as the site doubled in membership and reached its peak of subscribers. It was an honor to be a part of the site with Jason Walker, Tim Fitzgerald, D. Scott Fritchen, Brian Gates, Becky Fitzgerald and many others I'm forgetting and should mention. It was also an honor to pass on the role of editor to somebody more talented than myself, Rob Cassidy - who took it up another notch and is a star in this business.
Since leaving the site (originally to work for the national Rivals site before moving into retail managing Target and Dicks stores - make a joke) I've had regrets about things I could have done differently. I knew I could have worked harder. I knew I could have been more creative. I knew I could have tried more ideas. I knew I could have been much, much better. When I got the opportunity to come back and do this again, and for one of my best friends in Jeffrey Martin, it was maybe the most exciting professional opportunity I've ever had. And, I knew I would refuse to be outworked or have a single regret.
To get to do this again, with Jeff, a high-school/college friend in Chris Nelson, a driven and amazing recruiting analyst in Derek Young, a younger/more talented version of me in Grant Flanders, and most of all my wife Natalee, has been amazing. I want to thank them all for the opportunity and all of you for spending your time here. It's so, so appreciated.
Grant Flanders (K-StateOnline Producer): 100 days already? Seriously? That is nuts.
First I’ll start with the boss. Jeff is the most talented journalist I have been around. Obviously his resume and writing speaks for itself, but seeing it in action in the press box and on the baseline, you see a guy living his dream. Hanging out with him these past 100 days has been awesome. Being able to watch football with him on Sundays or chilling at his favorite coffee shop, I never take those moment for granted.
Next is another guy who gives up a lot for KSO, Matt. He has told me that I remind him of himself when he was my age. I don’t know how true that is, since he’s so darn cool. He had to be the one of the coolest 22-year-olds around. But anyway, Matt is like a brother to me. He gives me the criticism and praise that helps me get better - even at NBA2K.
DY knows so many people. That’s just the start of what makes him good at covering recruiting. Along with all of these connections, he is really good at assessing talent and filling in subscribers on just what you can expect from a certain player. Once you get past that he’s a Buckeyes fan, you see a really cool dude who loves doing what he’s doing.
Didn’t know much about him when I first met him, but Nelson has blown me away with his basketball knowledge. It shows that he used to coach. He’s a die hard K-State fan and he’s very honest with his assessments. I have enjoyed working with him so far and excited to continue. I love basketball and have been watching it my whole life, but I know that I can learn a thing or two from Nelson.
Last but certainly not least, Nats. She’s been the glue to this operation. KSO’s marketing director is so much more than just that. Nats has saved me a few times by bringing equipment to the stadium that we left at her and Matt’s house. She’s done so much for KSO, with nothing in return. Can’t thank her enough.
In these 100 days all of those people above have made KSO super special for me and make working here so much fun.
So here I am, doing what I love and am excited to bring more. I thank all the subscribers for sticking with us. We are only getting better and trying to bring more unique and premium K-State coverage every day. It’s been a pleasure so far.
Derek Young (Senior Recruiting Analyst): The first 100 days have been better than I could have ever expected or anticipated.
First off, working with Nats, Matt, Jeff and Flanders has been an amazing experience. I've never had an opportunity to work editorially as a team before. It was always independent so this was new for me, and now I don't think I'll ever work with a better one than the one I am apart of now.
Recruiting wise, and just myself, I am more proud of the Path of the Program pieces that I put a recruiting spin on, as well as the gigantic thread of coaches on the road and being able to deliver you recruiting information that was all-encompassing like that. I'm still shocked sometimes that it was never covered that way and I'm proud and honored to deliver it to you in a way that you've always deserved.
I'm also proud of the work that my pals here on the site have put out. The Zone Read is amazing every week, Coffee with Chris is fantastic, the pictures from Flando have been outstanding, and Nats' customer service is cutting edge and takes a load off of all of us.
I end up on the site for 12-14 hours a day, not just working, but also enjoying everyone else's work and engaging with everyone. I love what I do. Really, going forward, I just want to continue to do more of the same, and still find ways to hatch out creative content and keep the focus on you, not ourselves.
Chris Nelson (KSO Analyst): There have been two things in my life (not including family and friends) I have been passionate about since I was born - sports and K-State. Many of my fondest memories in life, including winning a state championship as a high school athlete, coaching in state tournaments, and watching many great KSU victories (that would have to be a list of its own), revolve around sports. So when Matt asked me to help with the basketball coverage, needless to say I was extremely excited. Even when I am watching a game as strictly a fan, I tend to be in "coach" mode and find myself watching what is going on off the ball just as much as I watch the ball. Being able to relay my thoughts and analysis to this community truly is a joy.
Generally speaking, in the majority of the non-conference games, the focus is on K-State themselves, and not on a scout of the opponent. As the season progresses into conference play, what the opponent does becomes much more important, and I hope to be able to provide some analysis in that area. For example, what offensive sets do they like to run, where do they go when they need a big bucket, and how does K-State defend those sets. As I am watching a game, I love to jot down plays that I see a team run. If there is any interest we could look at doing some white board sessions where I draw up some of those plays and talk through them. I also look forward to many more message board discussions. There is a ton of basketball knowledge on this board and being able to talk basketball with all of you is a lot of fun. Please feel free to ask me any questions any time. And if I ever say or write something that makes you think, "what in the world is he trying to say," let me know.
I am extremely proud to be a part of this team. The work that Matt, Jeff, Derek, and Grant have done in these first 100 days is remarkable. Each of them care deeply about this website and it shows. Not to take away from the amount of time that the others put in because they all work extremely hard, but I want to applaud and congratulate Matt. He has worked so hard to make this site a great place for K-State fans to come together and talk K-State sports. My role in this site is very small compared to what each of them delivers to you on a daily basis, but I hope the content I do provide lives up to the high standard they have established.
Natalee Hall (Marketing Coordinator): I’ll be cliche and start of by saying, time flies! I truly can’t believe it’s already been 100 days of KSO.
We were all so anxious to get this thing started and here we are now 100 days later still having a blast. I have to brag for a minute about how incredibly proud I am of all the guys, especially Matt. I’m a little biased I know, but of all the sacrifices he has made to provide for our family, I am most proud of seeing him pursue his passion. The support and encouragement from everyone of the work he’s done so far is incredible.
I look forward to continuing to build relationships with all of you through events, tailgates, and the message boards. Getting to know the subscribers personally has been my favorite part of it all, and will continue to be. Thank you to everyone for being apart of KSO!
FROM THE MEMBERS
The following is a collection of kind words we received from the community of The Foundation. Some have been edited for content (sorry for misquoting you!!!) and some simply couldn't be run in this feature despite their hilarity and kind words - but thank you all!!!
"What do I like best about the Foundation?? The gang is all back. The excitement and anticipation is back. This is what I paid for and enjoyed years ago with comments and content worthy of Wildcat sports ... Every time I log onto this site now it feels like a cleansing. Like walking through a beautiful canyon in a national park with a quiet waterfall cascading beside me. I mean I like this place now a lot! ... Thanks to Matt, Jeffrey, Derek and all who are contributing to the new product. It's worth paying for!!! (But don't raise the price or I take back everything I just said) "

"I wanted to take a minute to commend you and your staff on the outstanding work that you have done ... since your arrival, your team has honestly put more content on than I can keep up with and you have lured some posters back with the positive environment that provide a great amount of inside information ... Thank you! In short, I am a loyal subscriber and I really appreciate the time, effort and care that the KSO team put out there. Please pass on my appreciation and holiday greetings to the crew."
-ksufelis
"Having Matt, J-Mart, Derek and Flando running the K-State Rivals site has been a breath of fresh air! You guys are hitting it out of the park. Love all of the new content you have brought to the site (especially Coffee with Chris). I know I speak for many around KSO that we truly appreciate the back and forth on the message boards and the friendly bantering. Keep up the good work!"
-ccamp8912
"The best way I could describe the few few months or KSO, is that there is literally so much content, it has kept most of my free time occupied ... The staff has made the message boards great as well, and they are a wonderful source of information ... With KSO, I feel like I am getting a bargain for $10/month. I appreciate the great job the KSO team has done, and will continue to be an ecstatic subscriber."
-SigEpKSU
"Just like everyone else on the board praises, I have had the same thoughts. It was been a wonderful experience, and I will continue to visit the board multiple times a day ... I think the biggest enjoyment has been the level of activity ... What Derek has done and continues to do daily makes it worth it. I think the variety you offer through many writers makes it even more impressive that you all can bring the high level and insight. .. I know if there is a recent commit/decommit or offer on the table, there is no lag to getting on KSO to already see a topic started. I have no complaints at all and will continue to subscribe. Keep up the great work."

The KSO 100
To commemorate 100 days of K-StateOnline, what follows is the KSO 100. It's the 100 most (maybe) memorable things to us about the first 100 days of K-StateOnline.
