Beasley honored by Big 12 again

IRVING, Texas - Junior Curtis Jerrells(Baylor) and freshman Michael Beasley (Kansas State) have been chosen as the second Phillips 66 Big 12 Men's Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week for the 2007-08 season, in voting by a panel of media covering the conference. Jerrells is the first athlete from BU to win player honors since 2002-03 (Lawrence Roberts), while Beasley wins a weekly accolade for the second consecutive week.

Jerrells helped Baylor start 3-0 for the first time under head coach Scott Drew as the Bears won twice last week. The junior guard averaged 20.0 points and 7.5 rebounds in victories over Wichita State (64-55) and Notre Dame (68-64). He posted a game-high 23 points versus the Shockers, connecting on 8-of-16 shots from the field. He led the team with 17 points and seven boards against the Fighting Irish, including the go-ahead 3-pointer to give BU its first lead of the game with 3:15 remaining. On the week, he was 11-of-24 (.458) from the field, 7-of-13 (.538) from beyond the arc and 11-of-12 (.917) from the free throw line.

Beasley continued his impressive play to start the season with his second 20-point/20-rebound effort of the season in guiding the Wildcats to 77-64 win over Western Illinois. The freshman forward collected 28 points on 10-of-16 shooting with 22 rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block in a season-high 32 minutes. He came on strong in the second half of the contest with 23 points, on 8-of-9 shooting and 12 rebounds in 17 minutes. In the first 11 years of Big 12 competition, only nine players had posted 20-point/20-rebound games in their career. No player prior to Beasley has ever done it more than once in a career.
