Beasley named Rookie of the Week

IRVING, Texas - Kevin Rogers (Baylor) and Michael Beasley (Kansas State) have been chosen as the Phillips 66 Big 12 Men's Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, for the week of Dec. 17-24 in voting by a panel of media covering the conference. It is the first career honor for Rogers, while Beasley captures a weekly accolade for the third time in 2007-08.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Rogers led Baylor to two road victories last week, the Bears' first since 2004. The junior forward had a 12-point, 12-rebound effort at South Carolina, as BU stopped its Big 12 record 25-game road losing streak with a 92-84 win. He followed with a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds in a 71-60 victory at Southern. Rogers was 14-of-26 (.538) from the floor in two games and connected on 5-of-8 (.625) free throws. He also had one assist, two blocks and one steal. Rogers is the second Baylor men's basketball athlete (Curtis Jerrells) to win player accolades this season. It is only the second time in Big 12 history (1997-98) the Bears have had more than one person win player of the week in the same campaign.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Michael Beasley, Kansas State, F, Fr., 6-10, 235, Washington, D.C./Notre Dame Prep [Mass.]

Beasley recorded his 11th double-double in as many games as Kansas State won its only game of the week, 90-48, over Winston-Salem State. The freshman forward finished with 40 points, the most scored by any Big 12 player this season, to go along with 15 rebounds. He shot 14-of-22 (.636) from the field, including 3-of-4 (.750) from beyond the arc. He also connected on 9-of-13 (.692) free throws and had three blocked shots. It was the most points by a Kansas State player since Askia Jones collected a school-record 62 versus Fresno State on March 24, 1994. Beasley posted the 10th outing of 40 points or more by a player in Big 12 history, while recording his fifth contest with 30 or more points this year.
