Campbell wins national defensive honor

Ian Campbell, who sparked K-State in its 41-21 upset over No. 7 Texas with his 41-yard interception return for a touchdown, was awarded the Master Coaches Survey (MCS) Nike Game Ball and is the MCS' National Defensive Player of the Week, the MCS announced.

The Cimaron, Kan., native, who was the first of four Wildcats to record interceptions against Texas, grabbed the second-quarter interception at the line of scrimmage and raced 41 yards untouched to the end zone to break a 7-7 tie. Campbell also recorded two tackles and one quarterback hurry against the Longhorns.

Following play each week, 17 former college football coaches who make up the Master Football Coaches advisory poll will award an MCS Nike Game ball to the national offensive, defensive and special teams player of the week after reviewing all relevant game tape. Additionally, the MCS awards game balls to the offensive and defensive coordinators whose game plans made the biggest impact in their team's victory.

Wide receiver DeSean Jackson of California was the national offensive player of the week, while Illinois kick returner Arrelious Benn was the special teams player of the week. Wisconsin's Paul Chryst and South Florida's Wally Burnham were the offensive and defensive coordinators of the week.

Campbell and the Wildcats will face in-state rival Kansas on Saturday, Oct. 6 on FSN. Kickoff for the 105th Sunflower Showdown is set for 11 a.m. at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.
