10:00 a.m.: The Running Diary is back for Kansas State's match-up with TCU today from Bill Snyder Family Stadium.
You can read our Preview & Prediction for today's contest HERE.
Listen below to the TCU preview edition of The KSO Show:
10:13 a.m.: Still on Powercat Gameday with John Kurtz and Cole Manbeck, but we'll be heading to the stadium as soon as we finish up at 11:30 a.m. You can listen live to Powercat Gameday HERE.
Derek Young will head to the field to share pregame updates (and photos) from the sidelines, while Grant Flanders heads to Bramlage Coliseum to watch the men's basketball open scrimmage.
10:21 a.m.: Derek Young gives you last minute injury info, as he does every week, HERE on The Foundation.
11:43 a.m.: DY is on the field, and he has seen Phillip Brooks and Blaise Gammon both warming up, a couple of players we shared late injury info on, so you'd expect both to play. He has not seen Malik Knowles, however.
12:04 p.m.: Knowles is working on warming up a bit now; DY will be keeping a close eye on him throughout until kickoff.
12:39 p.m.: More notes from DY from the field. Jacardia Wright is in street clothes today. True freshman tailback Thomas Grayson is participating in the first phase of warm ups for the first time this season. Malik Knowles is fully suited up.
From a recruiting perspective, Talor Warner, Cody Stufflebean and Noah Bolticoff - who DY saw in person last night in McPherson - are all present.
Add T.J. Smith, Dorian Stephens, Robert Hentz and DaJon Harrison to that group of recruits seen.
12:50 p.m.: Elijah Sullivan, who we shared some late injury news on today, is also suited up and should be good to go.
1:01 p.m.: Freshman linebacker Levi Archer is in a sling. We're also trying to find freshman defensive end Khalid Duke during warm-ups.
DY has seen commit Nate Matlack on the field during K-State's warm ups.
1:31 p.m.: Check out a pregame photo gallery from Derek Young just minutes before kickoff.
1:42 p.m.: TCU takes the ball first, and has 12 men on the field prior to its first snap. Don't see that every day. It does take TCU just two plays, however, to make up for the penalty yardage, and more, out to K-State's 40-yard-line. The Horned Frogs look fast in person.
TCU does have shots to make big plays down the field, but - credit to K-State's defense - the Horned Frogs didn't move it an inch after getting to the 40-yard-line.
Joshua Youngblood went back to return the punt, which makes some sense considering DY talked about Brooks being dinged up. Logan Long also starts at tight end, which makes sense with the talk DY shared of Gammon battling some injury issues.
K-State will start from its 19, and James Gilbert is blown up for a 2-yard loss on the first snap. Skylar Thompson's first throw falls incomplete, and K-State immediately faces a third-and-12 from its own 17. Wykeen Gill does make the catch on third down, but he comes up two yards short after an 11-yard-gain. K-State has to punt.
1:48 p.m.: Okay, full transparency here, I wasn't really watching that last drive. Grant Flanders finished the basketball video ALREADY, and I was getting it ready for the site.
Now, I'm done.
And we've got football excitement, just in time for me to see it! Jonathan Alexander blocked AND recovered a punt, setting K-State's offense up at TCU's 20-yard line.
1:50 p.m.: SO MUCH HAPPENING RIGHT NOW!
Great play action play call from Courtney Messingham on second down, as Thompson hits a wide open Nick Lenners for a 21-yard touchdown.
Kansas State 7, TCU 0 with 9:56 left in the first quarter
1:59 p.m.: Okay, I think I'm caught up enough to settle down and focus in here.
TCU starts its next drive from the 25 after a touchback on Ty Zentner's kickoff, and it takes just two plays for the Horned Frogs to grab a first down. A personal foul on Kyle Ball, illegal hands to the face, pushes TCU all the way to K-State's 41-yard-line.
We've got a key third down here, with TCU facing third-and-five at K-State's 36. Jonathan Durham does a nice job in the slot of breaking up the throw, and TCU will punt from inside of K-State's 40. And, hey, if you are gonna punt inside the 40 that's how you do it, putting K-State at its own 5-yard-line.
2:04 p.m.: Gilbert picks up a valuable five yards on the ground on first down, taking you out of safety-range, at least. Gilbert dodges a tackler on second down to bring up a manageable third-and-two. Big play, here. Have to sustain drives and win field position, and this play certainly heavily impacts both of those goals.
Potentially huge penalty there on Adam Holtorf, though, who false started and made it third-and-seven. Now K-State is forced to call a timeout.
I called out QB draw to the rest of the KSO staff prior to that play, and K-State does indeed run Thompson for the first down. That's a big, big conversion. Lenners drops a poorly thrown, but very catchable ball on first down. Chris Herron loses a yard on a jet sweep, making it third-and-11. Thompson can pick between either a 20-yard rush or 85-yard touchdown pass, but he misses both when he can't hit a wide open Gill down the middle of the field. Missed opportunity there, no doubt.
TCU will take over, following a fantastic 60-yard Devin Anctil punt, and it's own 24-yard-line.
2:16 p.m.: TCU has a quick third-and-five on this drive, and the Horned Frogs run it, somewhat surprisingly, straight forward for a first down. Duggan is a good athlete, and he shakes Ball for an 18-yard rush and first down soon after, moving TCU to K-State's 48.
That's a really bad personal foul call. Elijah Sullivan had literally started his tackle before Duggan's late slide, and it's a free 15 yards for TCU.
END OF FIRST QUARTER: Kansas State 7, TCU 0
2:24 p.m.: TCU has already got two more first downs within the first minute of the second quarter and is inside K-State's 10-yard-line. DaQuan Patton is down injured, and linebacker is absolutely not a spot where K-State can afford anything serious.
Patton did walk off under his own power, but Sewo Olonilua plunges in from eight yards out to tie the game. That was a 10-play, 76-yard scoring drive that didn't include a single completed pass.
Kansas State 7, TCU 7 with 13:43 left in the second quarter
2:28 p.m.: K-State's next drive starts at the 25, and, to be honest, Thompson takes a needless sack to put K-State in a hole. He had room to run, or time to throw it away, and he did neither to lose six yards. He does, however, respond with a strike to Lenners for 13 yards. Thompson the misses Samuel Wheeler, who may have been held, on third-and-short. Another punt is forced, and Thompson taking that sack on first down was massive.
2:44 p.m.: Fortunately, TCU goes to Alex Delton at quarterback, and the Horned Frogs promptly go three-and-out. TCU had not gone three-and-out yet in this game. Inexcusable to put Delton into the game in that situation. Also odd to throw two passes with him, not a strength of his, after a drive in which you ran 10 straight times for a touchdown. Delton also threw both passes to his first read to his right, the same trend he followed last year at K-State. Duggan should play every snap the rest of the way for TCU. K-State will take over at its own 26 with a chance to regain the lead.
TCU jumps offsides on first down, then Gilbert grabs four yards to bring up the ever so fun second-and-short. Gilbert gets the first down with a nice second effort. Very good to keep this driving rolling and possess the ball a little bit. No real offensive rhythm has been created so far.
Gilbert gets another five, and he's running hard. Not shocking. Thompson makes a fantastic throw to Dalton Schoen for 25 yards. Now K-State is suddenly deep into TCU territory at the 33. Thompson keeps again and gains 10 yards. Really like seeing him carry the ball today, much like Iowa State's Brock Purdy did with tons of success against TCU last week.
Gilbert gains another 11 yards on the ground all the way to the 14. Knowles has entered the game on this drive. We've now got a third-and-10 from the 13-yard line. Three isn't bad here. Don't turn it over.
Not only does K-State not turn it over, the Wildcats slip Gill over the middle for a 13-yard touchdown, Thompson's second touchdown toss of the game.
I won't beat this horse too dead, but I wouldn't be stunned if we look back at TCU's decision to force Delton into the game as where momentum changed.
Kansas State 14, TCU 7 with 5:30 left in the second quarter
2:57 p.m.: TCU goes back to Duggan, and TCU goes back to being a challenge to stop on offense once again. The Horned Frogs quickly pick up a pair of first downs and march into K-State's territory after a face mask call.
We've got another key third down, this one with six yards to go from K-State's 32. A.J. Parker needlessly holds Jalen Reagor to give up a first down on a pass interference call despite having good coverage. I think it was an appropriately thrown flag, just wasn't needed by Parker.
Time for third-and-eight from the 15-yard-line, and K-State's defensive line meets at the quarterback for a very key sack. Huge play there to force a field goal try. TCU converts on the field goal try, but it was a big sack to prevent the touchdown.
Kansas State 14, TCU 10 with 0:33 left in the second quarter.
HALFTIME SCORE: Kansas State 14, TCU 10
3:26 p.m.: Very nice opening return of the second half for Youngblood, who takes it out to the 38-yard-line. Knowles was out to return that kickoff with Youngblood for the first time today. K-State took a deep shot at Knowles on the first snap of the second half, and TCU had to hold Knowles for a 10-yard penalty.
Two plays later Thompson does a nice job of keeping a play alive, his eyes down the field and making sure he gets rid of the ball before taking a big loss. It also turns into a pass interference call and another first down at TCU's 39. Thompson does it again, keeping his eyes up and making a play down the field to Schoen for another first down on the following play.
Thompson is dealing right now. Nice blitz pickup from Jax Dineen, then Thompson hits Gill for a 23-yard gain. Now the Wildcats do face a third-and-goal from the three, and Thompson has to avoid pressure and throw it away. Blake Lynch is good from 21 yards out.
Kansas State 17, TCU 10 with 11:30 left in the third quarter
3:35 p.m.: TCU's first second half drive starts from the 25. The Horned Frogs do face a third-and-five, and they haven't gone three-and-out yet with Duggan at QB. They might here, though, as a false start now makes it third-and-10.
Duggan pulls it down and rips off 24 yards on the ground, however, for a key first down. He's going to eventually be a very good player for TCU and is giving K-State issues on the ground today.
Duggan then scores from 46 yards out. What an AMAZING run by him, and missed tackles GALORE by K-State. It's absolutely stunning to me TCU wasted a possession in this game by going to Delton, when they've moved the ball consistently with Duggan. The Wildcats are going to need to answer.
Kansas State 17, TCU 17 with 8:42 left in the third quarter
3:43 p.m.: Gilbert can't get anything on first down, and Thompson just overthrows Schoen on a deep ball down the right sideline to bring up third-and-nine. Thompson is sacked with almost immediate pressure right up the middle. Not a good sequence, obviously, for the K-State offense.
3:48 p.m.: Duggan again drives TCU out beyond the Horned Frog 40-yard-line, but Durham has very nice coverage on a third-down deep ball attempt and forces a TCU punt. Very nice job by the K-State defense of making a stand there and turning the ball right back over to the Wildcat offense.
It feels like K-State's either had long drives for scores in this game or has gone three-and-out and punted it back to TCU after one minute of possession. The Wildcats certainly do not HAVE to score here, but it would be ideal to move the ball a bit, keep control of field position and give the defense a little bit of time on the sideline.
4:00 p.m.: Well, K-State takes a big loss on first down, as Thompson loses seven yards when he cannot manage the snap-to-handoff procedure. He throws incomplete on second down while getting blasted. Now is' third-and-17, and Thompson hits a HUGE play to a wide open Knowles streaking down the left sideline for 33 yards. Could be the play of the game, if K-State goes on to win. Keep that one in your mind.
A false start puts K-State behind the chains again, though, and eventually creates a third-and-11 situation from midfield. Thompson can't find Gill, and a punt is coming. I do, however, like that K-State at least moved it a bit and should control field position.
TCU had to start on its own nine, but Duggan ran for another 10 yards and a first down to get the Horned Frogs moving. A third-and-six from the 24-yard-line could be the final play of the third quarter. Duggan completes the pass, but it appears short of the first down by half a yard. Another key stand from this K-State defense.
END OF THIRD QUARTER: Kansas State 17, TCU 17
4:15 p.m.: Nothing doing for K-State on that drive, as the Wildcats are forced into a three-and-out. Anctil pins Reagor and TCU back inside the 20 at the 17-yard-line.
We've got a third down already, maybe K-State is due for its first three-and-out against Duggan here? Three yards to go, and Olonilula picks up the first down on the ground. Another third-down opportunity for the defense here three plays later, a tougher down and distance for the Horned Frogs on third-and-seven. Wow. Kevion McGee has a pick six served up on a platter, but he stops and waits for the ball to come to him instead of attacking it. While doing so, a TCU receiver flashes in front of him and makes the first down reception. McGee immediately put his hands to his helmet, knowing the mistake he made there.
Yet ANOTHER big third down, this one even further for TCU on third-and-10. Horned Frog receiver falls down, and TCU will punt. K-State's defense has done enough, so far, to win this game.
4:27 p.m.: Field position for this key drive is not ideal, as the Wildcats are at their own 5-yard-line. Knowles gains five on first down on a very nice play design. If he can keep his feet, man, he may score.
I called for a bit of the QB run game today, and Thompson gets a carry for 66 yards right up the middle of the defense. I think it's THE way to attack this TCU defense, today, at least on the ground.
Gilbert loses a yard on the next play, and Thompson goes incomplete to make it third-and-11 from TCU's 30. Thompson picks up 10 yards with a completion to Taylor. It's now fourth-and-one. K-State goes for it, and Thompson does a great job of finding a crease and picking up the first down.
An incompletion and short run by Gilbert has us looking at yet another third-and-nine, this from TCU's 17-yard-line with just more than four minutes left. Thompson finds Knowles across the middle for 10 yards and another first down. Knowles is struggling to cut and keep his feet, but that's still a big play regardless.
First and goal from the seven with about three-and-a-half minutes left. Thompson keeps over right end for a touchdown. Huge, huge drive. Very impressive.
Kansas State 24, TCU 17 with 2:45 left in the game
4:35 p.m.: Sorry, it's so hard to catch up! Dorian Stephens just committed, and we have two stories linked above.
Wyatt Hubert sacks Duggan for a HUGE play for this defense, forcing a second-and-19 with 1:45 left. Parker makes a nice tackle to present a massive gain and make it third-and-11, and an incomplete pass makes it fourth down. K-State gets the stop, and this defense has come up big AGAIN.
K-State should win this game. I'm heading down for post game.
FINAL SCORE: Kansas State 24, TCU 17
POST GAME NOTES
-Klieman praises Courtney Messignham for being aggressive on a drive where K-State was backed up to its own 5-yard-line, a drive that turned into a game deciding 95-yard touchdown drive to win the game.
-Klieman expected it to be a game where Thompson could have chances to make plays with his feet thanks to all the man coverage TCU played.
-Klieman says Knowles didn't practice all week, and says it was a bit of pitch-count, second-half situation to use him in that manner.
-Klieman credits pass defense and pass rush for being the difference makers for the Wildcat defense.
-Klieman thinks his defensive line was relentless, and he challenged them at halftime. He said it was really the first time he challenged the team in this manner, and he felt like they responded well to it.
-Klieman praises Thompson's toughness and resolve when asked what he's most pleased with in relation to Thompson's game.
-Klieman says he doesn't want to get caught up in the results and that society worries too much about the results, not the process. He thinks the coaches and players need to focus on the process and that he simply will not focus on the negative, and that there's too much negative in the world right now.
-On tackling issues, Klieman says "we have to get better."
