LIVE Game Story: No. 19/20 K-State blasts Charlotte 55-7
Much like last week's season opening 55-19 win against Central Arkansas, K-State not only had the first possession of the contest, the Wildcats made the most of it. Unlike last week, however, it was the Wildcats running game that got things going as opposed to the special teams.
K-State fed sophomore running back Alex Barnes the ball repeatedly on the opening possession, giving him five carries as part of a 11-play, 75-yard drive that was eventually capped off by a fullback Winston Dimel 5-yard touchdown carry to put the Wildcats on the board first. Dimel was also a huge part of establishing the ground game, carrying the ball himself three times on the first possession.
The Wildcat defense had a much better start than it did in its season opener, forcing the 49ers to go three-and-out on their first possession of the contest. K-State kept up with the ground-game dominance on the follow possession, going 70 yards on four rushes to extend the lead to 14-0. Quarterback Jesse Ertz was the one to provide the points, scoring from 35-yards out on the ground to make it 14-0.
The K-State special teams got on the scoreboard last week, and this week it was the defense providing a non-offensive touchdown early in the contest. That came thanks to safety Kendall Adams and a 30-yard interception return for a score that gave K-State a 21-0 lead with 3:58 still left in the first period.
Charlotte did finally answer K-State when it regained possession, thanks in large part to a 65-yard kickoff return that gave the 49ers a short field. Dual-threat quarterback Hassan Klugh put his team on the board with 2:17 left in the first quarter on a 19-yard touchdown run to trim the Wildcat lead to 21-7.
The running game may have been the focus, but that doesn't mean the passing game wasn't humming along as well. Ertz was very efficient through the air through the Wildcats first four drives - regularly targeting sophomore wide receiver Isaiah Zuber. A penalty inside the 10-yard line helped stall the Wildcats, however, and forced them to settle for a 22-yard Matthew McCrane field goal that made the score 24-7.
One defensive touchdown wasn't enough for the Wildcat defense, or for Adams, apparently. The safety alertly picked up a pass down the line of scrimmage that was ruled a fumble - not an incomplete pass - and raced 46 yards down the sideline to extend K-State's lead to 31-7.
Shortly before the end of the first half K-State put more distance between themselves and the 49ers with another lengthy drive. This one was a nine-play, 62-yard drive that again featured the ground game and was capped off by a 4-yard Barnes touchdown run.
The 49ers had to be somewhat relieved to get into the locker room for halftime, but unfortunately for the visitors from Charlotte things didn't get any better as the second half began. The K-State offense quickly came up with another stop and then put together yet another lengthy scoring drive - this time a nine-play march that ended with junior tailback Dalvin Warmack denting the end zone from 13 yards out.
The Wildcats final points came on the heels of backups on both offense and defense throughout the fourth quarter. A second McCrane field goal made the score 48-7 and a bruising touchdown run from Mike McCoy proved to be the final points in K-State's dominating 55-7 victory.
The Wildcats dominate the 49ers not just on the scoreboard, but statistically as well. K-State rolled up 493 yards of offense - including 304 on the ground - to just 168 for the 49ers. Individually, Ertz was sharp again, going 16-of-22 for 178 yards while adding another 76 yards and a score on the ground. Barnes fell just short of 100 yards, finishing with 99 on 16 carries, and Zuber led the way for the receivers with steven grabs for 73 yards.
The win moved the Wildcats to 2-0 on the young season, as K-State will now prepare for its first true test when it visits Vanderbilt next week.
