Conference Call (Quickie) is a daily column focusing on the biggest stories in the Big 12 Tournament and what's happening in Kansas City this week.
Kansas City - OK, no Googling allowed - can you name the last five winners of the Big 12 Tournament? How about the last three? Hell, do you even know who won it last year?
Two schools have split the last five tournament titles - Iowa State and Kansas. And, believe it or not, the Cyclones have won more during that span, snipping the Sprint Center nets three times to the Jayhawks’ pair.
What does this mean, you ask?
I have no idea, other than suggesting KU is probably primed to run through the field this year or Iowa State is poised to go on a miraculous four-day run that ends with the Big 12 getting all 10 of its teams in the NCAA Tournament.
How wild would that be?
The Cyclones were competitive at times this season, struggling once point guard Nick Weiler-Babb injured his knee and was shut down for the season in late February. Freshmen Lindell Wigginton and Cam Lard have been terrific, and senior guard Donovan Jackson has been steady, averaging 15.3 points.
They have enough firepower.
Plus, as explained above, Iowa State has history in Kansas City.
If what the coaches have been saying all season is true - top to bottom, the Big 12 is as good as any league in recent history - why not?
Could #10for10 actually happen?
It would be unprecedented - a conference having all of its teams earn NCAA Tournament berths - but why not try to be exceptional?
It starts tonight.
WEDNESDAY'S SELECTIONS
No. 8 Oklahoma State vs. No. 9 Oklahoma, 6 p.m., ESPNU: Round 3 of Bedlam? Giddy up. One request, though - can we stop dogging Trae Young? Sure, he had a rough few weeks during his freshman season, but can remember that he averaged 27.4 points and 8.1 assists? And, sure, the offense was built around him, but should he be penalized for that? He’s fun, and the Big 12 Tournament in Kansas City is all about fun, and I’d like to see Young for as long as possible in this environment. However, I think the Sooners are one-and-done - there’s something about the Cowboys, who solved OU in the second regular-season meeting after getting smacked around in the first. Plus, Oklahoma State currently boasts the longest winning streak in the conference - two (!).
PREDICTION: Oklahoma State 86, Oklahoma 81
No. 7 Texas vs. No. 10 Iowa State, 8 p.m., ESPNU: Mo Bamba told reporters Tuesday he didn’t think he’d go against the Cyclones, so that’s already a victory for Iowa State. All joking aside, why not the Clones? They’ve had success here before, so there’s history. And they should have plenty of fan support, but a poor regular season will probably dampen the turnout. Remember, though, we’re pushing for #10for10, so for the greater good, Iowa State needs to prevail. Besides, the Longhorns probably punched their ticket in the regular-season finale against West Virginia, so it’s all about the Clones.
PREDICTION: Iowa State 77, Texas 75

THE LITTLE BIG PICTURE (LBP)
What better way to start the Big 12 Tournament than Bedlam?
Not only is it a classic rivalry game between Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, but it has tons of potential meaning. The Sooners are likely safe – likely – as part of the NCAA Tournament field. But Oklahoma State is also knocking on the door, and a win over Trae Young and the Sooners would not only give them a season-series win over their rivals and possible fellow bubble team, but also a shot at a third win over Big 12 champion Kansas.
Oh, and it’s another (last?) chance to watch Trae Young play a Big 12 basketball game.
The nightcap features another bubble team in Texas, a Longhorn group that probably can’t afford a loss to the last place team in the Big 12 on the opening night of the conference tourney. Their opponent? Oh, only the darling of Kansas City this time of year, the Iowa State Cyclones.
Yup, should be a fun night in Kansas City.
